Creating a dance is always about storytelling, whether we are literally portraying a character or creature, putting song lyrics to motion, evoking a mood or scene from nature, or simply showing how a piece of music moves us in a dramatic way that builds to an exciting climax with the song. Combined with natural body language, storytelling techniques used in books, plays or movies can be directly translated into the kinetic medium.

As we delve more deeply into Isidora’s Elements System, we begin by asking ourselves questions. Where do we find our initial inspiration? Which dance medium is best for our tale? Which emotions do we want our audience to feel and how do we spark it without the use of words? How do we use the music to hit the classic plotting highlights: opening situation, inciting incident, conflict, climax, resolution? And how do we move past those creativity-stunting doubts lurking within us to dance the tale we yearn to tell?

Didn’t take Elements last time Izzy was here? No problem. Review will happen organically throughout the workshop.

2- 4 p.m.

Level: Open

No two dancers are alike. Age, height, frame, gender, fitness level, personality...the activities we do all day...the injuries and conditions we live with...the pastimes we pursue and the styles of movement we bring to our palette...All these factors and more contribute to the kind of dancer we were born to be.

In this workshop, we will explore ways of listening to our bodies, feeling into our hearts, and opening to the Muse to discover our most natural and healthy impulses of expression. In this way, we can gracefully adapt to the changes that happen to anyone who stays with dance for more than a brief flirtation. Additionally, we're more likely to prevent injury when we listen to our bodies.

Next, we will delve deeply into each body region to explode our vocabulary and find new (or remember forgotten) ways of embodying the music. Our dancing moves to unique and innovative levels when we can balance working with what is most natural to the vessel we have, while simultaneously blasting through whichever boundaries we can.

Forget dancing outside the box. Even when it feels as though there is one, it's only cardboard--easily stomped flat until there is no box!
