ELEMENTAL WATER: Domain of the Mind; Realm of Story

The Element of Water

And That Which Contains It

One droplet.

A lily-pad pond.

The glassy lake--or 10,000.

The jagged-smooth crystallization of a frozen waterfall.

The sea.

The lake basin.

A canal's channel.

Winding, wending riverbanks.

My cup.

The track of one tear.

Profusely pouring droplets of sweat.

The source and conduits of our nervous system.

The Mind.

Domain of the Mind

  • Immeasurable depth; the basin that contains it.

  • Vast power; the banks that direct it.

  • Harnessing & channeling movement, energy, emotion, thought.

  • Directed navigation: knowing when to go with the flow, when to sit still, and when to battle upstream.

  • Consciously deciding when and how to express thoughts and emotions.

  • Purify, refresh, rejuvenate, cleanse, calm.

  • Maintaining supple, fluid focus

Water is Life. But without containment, it floods the land, drowns vegetation, destroys homes and habitats, and washes away all in its path. If left to sprawl and stagnate without refreshment or movement, everything it touches rots.

Although seasonal river floods can be nurturing to an otherwise barren land--just ask the Nile--it is containment by the riverbanks that allows for navigation and easier travel.

One of the many places I meditate. Enjoy:

Realm of Story

  • Books, telling tall tales, movies, TV, plays, playlists, music lyrics, poetry, ghost stories, journals, journalism, jokes, documentaries, dance-tales...

  • The look in someone's eyes, the tone of their voice, the heart on their sleeve--for the one who can read it.

  • My story, your story, their story, our story

  • Who we were, who we are, who we think we are, who we wish we were, who we might become...

Some stories are too raw to speak. Some wounds are too tender to touch. When that happens, dance has always been the way I get it moving, get it out of me. Often it still is.

This is where the volatile emotions of Fire meet the channeled, intentional expression of Water. For me, it's a safer way to let the dam crack and break through, because the audience can interpret it any way they wish. Before I became brave enough to write my stories, I had been dancing them for decades.

In this piece, I literally burned my sandals to shreds on those scorching stones. But we were almost done filming and the piece was like a volcano--needing to eject and eject until the emotional purging was done and I could finally get into that fountain, cool my feet, cleanse my heart, and do what the lyrics said: "These precious things--let them bleed, let them wash away."

A piece about stories that become frozen inside the body, and some of the ways I get it flowing again:

MY STORY:

STORIES & TELLING:

Water Dance

  • Circles & Infinities

  • Rolling & rippling movements

  • Snakey arms & serpentine spine

  • Crash! Splash! Dribble...drop--BING!

  • Movements flow from source to chosen destination via fluid muscular contraction.

  • Fountaining up and falling with gravity, rather than exploding.

  • Tension is always maintained and channeled, rather than released.

  • Water is the home of choreography--choosing one moment of inspiration & emotion (Air & Fire) to repeat and hone through body movement (Earth).

An example of Water Movement and its differences from Air:

Or...you know...simply dancing in water to learn how it moves. Plus, it's an amazing playmate:
